Peterson Drilling Products Specialist, Mountainland Supply Company The drilling industry is very diverse and adaptive. Drilling equipment may be utilized to determine the design of the rest of the project. The information obtained by using drilling equipment is used to better define the geology. The different types of drilling rigs were discussed in last month’s column. This month, we will talk about Water Trucks. The drilling industry is very innovative in addressing challenges. One of the biggest challenges is ensuring the correct quality and quantity of makeup water for the circulating system is available. In the western U.S., adequate quantity and quality of water is usually not readily available and may be the purpose for drilling the hole; if so, some method of transferring water must be determined. If water is available close by, it may only require a water hose and an adequate pump. When a hose and/or a pump is not adequate, we must become more creative. I have seen open-top stock tanks in varying sizes and configurations simply placed on the back of a flatbed truck or trailer. While perfectly adequate for water and drilling fluid in a stationary setting, this method is usually inefficient for moving liquids. Every time you start the truck moving forward, turn the truck, drive on irregular surfaces, or stop the truck, the water tends to slosh around and spill so you may lose up to a third of the water you started out with at the source. The spilled water may tend to help keep the dust down on the access roads, but the sloshing also causes handling and stability problems when moving the truck. I have also seen old circular stationary tanks in different sizes and configurations used that were not designed for transporting liquids safely. These tanks have the same stability issues as the open-top stock tanks, especially on hilly or mountainous roads. Water trucks are just like everything else involved on the jobsite in a drilling project. The equipment of choice should be designed for the intended purpose. Equipment used to move water should be designed for that purpose, with proper baffles in place to minimize sloshing and spilling during movement, as well as minimize stability issues with the truck. There are many rig support units available both with circular tanks and flatbeds. These units are designed to be multitask capable with room and capacity to move more than just water. Just like every other tool or piece of equipment, always chose the proper equipment to ensure it is fit for purpose and safety. Thanks for reading. As I often say, “A man has to know his limitations.” Working together, it is amazing where we can go. Let’s enjoy the trip! If you have any questions on drilling fluids or if you have another topic you would like addressed, please remember this column is ours. Help me make it of value to you. It needs to be an interactive tool. I need your feedback. Send your suggestions to Michele (below) and she will get them to me.
