The increased focus on expanding high-speed broadband access across Arkansas has increased the demand for qualified individuals with this specific skill base. The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton is hoping to help with employment opportunities by offering a four-week workforce education and training program to prepare participants for careers in HDD/boring. The Underground Directional Drilling Training program is a two-part course beginning with a required one-week (40-hour) core class - Fiber/Broadband Essentials - which covers topics such as personal protective equipment; underground utility locate process; reading blueprint/construction drawings; electrical safety and stray voltage detection; equipment and load securement; and responding to emergency situations. The second part of the program is three weeks of hands-on practical training - Underground Directional Drilling - which includes safety; basic HDD operation; tracking electronics; preventative maintenance; drilling fluids and mixing; downhole tooling; vacuum excavating; as well as a four-day, real-world jobsite replication.
