Their latest strategy is the Layer to Langford Pipeline Project to improve the raw water transfer capacity between its operating areas. About 12 miles long, the pipeline will move water from Layer-de-la-Haye Water Treatment Works to the existing storage reservoir at Langford Water Treatment Works. The proposed pipeline route was developed following extensive ecological surveys, engineering considerations, and landowner engagement. Allied Exploration and Geotechnics then completed ground investigation work along the proposed route, taking samples up to 50 feet in depth to assess underlying soil conditions. There was even archaeological fieldwork which involved excavating strip trenches across the pipeline route to allow for the search of artifacts. Complete Moling Services is using the nonintrusive horizontal directional drilling method to cross two major rivers in Essex - the River Blackwater and Langford Cut. A pilot tunnel will be drilled approximately 20 feet beneath the rivers, followed by work to widen the tunnel to accept the larger diameter water pipeline.
