WorldWide Drilling Resource® The “Idiots” Corner by “Billy Bob Smith” For a few years, I have avoided political comments and/or preferences, and I will do my best to honor this month but to be honest, I have had a little too much the past few years. This woke stuff is starting to get under my skin. So regardless of your political preferences, please keep an open mind. In the past few years, the concept of disinformation seems to be dominating society, politics, the media, and life in general. As we begin a new year, let’s focus on truth rather than untruth, or something else. Let’s answer three quick questions: 1) A young woman walked into the room. What’s her age? 2) A friend just purchased a new car. What did they pay? 3) You just hired a smart new employee. Define smart. I could go on with these types of questions, but I’ll save you time. What’s the point? Well, I will bet those of you who answered these questions all had different answers. Why? What is young, smart, or rich? It depends on your definition or interpretation. Okay, one more. Your boss or customer says, “I need it right away.” When is right away? Truth definition: That which is true or in accordance with fact or reality. An idiot’s definition of truth? Over the years, I have heard many versions, but here is the most popular one. There are very few life truths. For example, death is a truth. Gravity is a truth - agree or disagree - it is a truth. Most of the other stuff we say or hear is nothing more than opinion, feeling, prejudice, etc. So what is a half-truth? It’s a blending of truth with lies, misrepresentation, or opinion. I want to cover three quick points when it comes to the truth: Why don’t people tell the truth? Are we talking here about normal people or idiots, because there are significant differences. Idiots don’t tell the truth because they believe the lack of truths they are saying or sharing. If we believe idiots, in the end, we are as dumb as they are. Normal people share untruths to protect themselves in some way - mentally, emotionally, politically, physically, or in some other way. The cost of a lack of truth? Sooner or later, a lack of truth will show up whether it takes days or years. This is true in all areas of life and business. For example, a scientist says the universe is “so and so”. Then 100 years later, we find out they were wrong. A spouse says something, and a few weeks later their partner finds out they were wrong. This can also be true in medicine and education. A simple question I always ask when anyone says almost anything is: “How do you know that?” A lack of truth - sooner or later - can cost customers, employees, spouses, friends, and more. Your version of the truth. You believe what you believe because you believe what you believe. Get it? It’s really simple - you believe in what is comfortable and easy and makes you look smart or wise to the outside world. Let me wrap this up with a simple question: Have you ever believed something wrong or untrue that, over time, hurt some area of your life or that you told others and hurt someone else? Truth is not always easy, but in the end, it is always better than untruths.
