How Much Do You Know About Natural Gas? Adapted from Information by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) Natural gas is found in underground reservoirs, locations where large volumes of natural gas are trapped in the earth’s subsurface. These reservoirs are composed of porous and permeable rocks confined by impermeable rock or water barriers. What are proved reserves? Proved reserves are volumes of natural gas that analyses of geological and engineering data demonstrate to be recoverable under existing economic and operating conditions. Proved reserves could increase each year with additional successful exploratory wells and as more is learned about the geology of the fields where current wells are producing. New technologies and increased natural gas pricing can change previously uneconomic natural gas resources into proved reserves. Since they depend on economic factors, proved reserves shrink and grow with changes in wholesale prices and production costs. How large are U.S. proved natural gas reserves? The amount of proved natural gas reserves in the U.S. has increased nearly every year since 2000. Major advances in natural gas exploration and production technologies, such as horizontal directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing in shale, sandstone, carbonate, and other tight geologic formations, have led to increases in natural gas production and reserves. What are undiscovered technically recoverable resources (TRR)? In addition to proved natural gas reserves, large volumes of natural gas are classified as undiscovered - yet technically recoverable resources, or TRR. Undiscovered TRR exist because the geologic settings are favorable, despite the uncertainty of their specific locations. Undiscovered TRR are also assumed to be producible over a time period using existing technology. EIA estimates the United States has about 2867 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of TRR of natural gas. TRR estimates are very uncertain, particularly in places where relatively few wells have been drilled. Early estimates tend to vary and shift significantly over time as new geological information is gained through additional drilling, as long-term productivity for existing wells is determined, and as productivity of new wells increases with technology improvements and better management practices. How much natural gas does the United States consume? According to the latest statistics, the United States uses approximately 30.28 Tcf of natural gas each year, most of which is used for electricity generation and industrial purposes.
