Safety by Ronald B. Peterson Drilling Products Specialist, Mountainland Supply Company Safety must be our focus, not only our safety, but the safety of everyone around us. This includes our coworkers and both invited and uninvited people on our jobsite. We work in a high-energy environment where things can, and often do, happen quickly. We need to look over our workplace and determine any potential risks. This includes obvious and less obvious situations. We need to make sure any risks are properly marked and access is limited whenever appropriate. We have made significant advancements in safety protocols over the years; and while we have come a long way, we still have room for improvement. The most important thing we can expect from any project is for everyone to complete their assigned tasks and return home safely and unharmed. It is becoming a common practice to have restricted access to many jobsites, along with a dedicated safety person on location. Their job is to watch for visitors to the jobsite, greet them as they approach, and determine the need for them to be on location. Once the need for them to be on the jobsite is confirmed, it is then necessary to make sure they are briefed on proper safety protocol. They must be oriented with site-specific safety requirements. It must be verified they have proper personal protective equipment, know how to use it, and are willing to use it. If they do not have a valid reason for being there and/or are unwilling to comply with site-specific requirements, they must be denied access for their own good, as well as the welfare of those required to be on location. Curiosity seekers can view operations from the perimeter at a safe distance. Safety needs to be a natural and automatic part of our life. We need to always emphasize the importance of completing every job safely with no one injured or hurt. Safety should be emphasized and recognized as our number one priority. Always remember you have “STOP WORK AUTHORITY” when you observe potential safety hazards. Make sure you use it properly and when appropriate. No one ever needs to be exposed to unsafe conditions. We need to look out for each other. Safety incidents almost always cost significant amounts of money, time, and often jobs. We should always err on the side of caution. If there is any doubt, play it safe!!! It is my belief that we borrow the earth’s water and other resources from our descendants; therefore, we need to do everything we can to leave things in better shape than when we found them. Please remember, I would like this to be our column. I need your input to make it so; otherwise, it becomes my column.
