WorldWide Drilling Resource

23 MARCH 2023 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Launch of the Latest High-Tech Geotechnical Vessel Adapted from Information by Fugro Fugro, based in the Netherlands, has one of the world’s largest fleets of geotechnical vessels equipped with the latest drilling technology and fitted with state-of-the-art onboard systems. The newest addition to the fleet is the Fugro Quest featuring an energy-efficient design. Since it is able to use HVO biofuel (hydrotreated vegetable oil), it will use significantly less fuel than other geotechnical crafts. This aquatic rig will support subsea projects such as downhole in situ testing and investigations for various foundation types, including those used for wind farms and pipeline routes. The ship’s capabilities include the acquisition of highquality geotechnical data from about 6500 feet below sea level. The vessel is equipped with cutting-edge systems including proprietary survey and drilling equipment, as well as dedicated coring systems and onboard soil testing laboratory facilities. These systems allow the vessel to safely carry out geotechnical operations anywhere in the world. Its remote positioning and fast data-processing capabilities will allow clients to access acquired project data in near real time from the cloud. The Fugro Quest has set off on its maiden voyage for Vattenfall's offshore wind farm near Norfolk in the United Kingdom. Dennis Koenen, Fugro’s service line director for geotechnics in Europe and Africa said, “[This] launch is fully aligned with our path to net zero operations by 2035. Fugro Quest consumes less fuel than other large geotechnical vessels. It is hybrid ready, comes with automatic handling of tubulars and geotechnical tools, and has the latest IT (information technology) capabilities onboard to safely carry out operations across the globe. Bookings until July 2023 are already in place, and we’re excited to show how our new vessel can enhance the execution of our projects.” C&G
