With the world getting back on track post COVID, general growth of geothermal power generation capacity remains slow. In the beginning of last year, experts estimated a large number of plants would be able to come online in 2022, along with increased activities for geothermal exploration, drilling, and construction of plants. Unfortunately, it hasn’t happened to the extent anticipated. Only eight countries added geothermal power generation capacity with a total of 16 additional plants. Kenya, Indonesia, and the U.S. showed the main growth. Other additions were reported in China, Philippines, and Japan. Here are the top ten geothermal countries year-end 2021: United States - 3794megawatts (MWs) Indonesia - 2356 MWs Philippines - 1935 MWs Turkey - 1682 MWs - the numbers were changed/adapted, there were no actual additions in 2022 New Zealand - 1037 MWs - no change Mexico - 962.7 MWs - no change Kenya - 944 MWs Italy - 944 MWs - no change Iceland - 754 MWs Japan - 621 MWs Other countries represent an installed power generation capacity of 1097 MWs. Overall, a total of 286.4 MWs were added in 2022, bringing the total installed geothermal power generation capacity at the end of the year 2022 to 16,127 MWs. GEO
