26 OCTOBER 2023 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Want to Live Longer? by Tim Connor There is a wide body of evidence that people who laugh more, smile more, have more fun, and are positive and optimistic live longer than people who never do any of these. I’m not a physician, but I have read reports which seem to have the inside track on why this might be true. In the early 1950s, a medical doctor, Lionel Tiger wrote a groundbreaking book Optimism, The Biology of Hope. Since then, there have been a number of major additions to his research including Benson, Symington, Chopra, and many others who have validated Tiger’s findings in one way or another. Think about it. When you feel positive or just glad to be alive and generally optimistic about your circumstances and future, don’t you tend to smile more? When you laugh, don’t you tend to see life just a little brighter? The opposite is also true. Take yourself back to a time when you were anxious, frustrated, or discouraged; didn’t life just seem to pile up day after day with bad news, negatives, or difficult circumstances? The brain (mind) controls everything going on in your physical body every second of every day from respiration, digestion, feelings, pain, attitudes, and so much more. It’s estimated there are over three trillion chemical reactions going on in your body every second. So what happens in the body sooner or later is the direct outcome of what’s going on in your mind. It’s impossible to control your digestion, but your mind can have a negative impact on what goes on in your digestive system - it’s called ulcers. Your body’s natural response to stress also increases stomach acid, a source of ulcers. So ulcers are aggravated by what’s going on in your mind. Stress is the number one contributor to diseases of all types today. So what does laughter, fun, and optimism have to do with living longer? Your body is made of over 70% water and 99.99999% space. It is nothing more than trillions of atoms in constant motion. When you blend the research of physics, medicine, and spirituality, it becomes quite evident which is in control when it comes to health and long life. Your mind is a neutral entity and responds to your thoughts. Think happy thoughts and life seems better. Think unhappy thoughts and life seems to go downhill fast. Laughter is one of the best stress reducers there is. Want to live longer and healthier? Yes, there is the old argument of “nurture vs. nature.” In the end, I believe you and I can have more control over our destiny by controlling what we allow to occupy our mind from moment to moment. Don’t rent space in your mind to other people’s garbage!
