Innovation Through Resilience: Krishnaswamy’s Journey by Vidhya & Hari, Kovai Drilling Applications Strength defined him, with resilience at his core, Mr. Subbulunaidu Krishnaswamy's entrepreneurial journey unfolded with a focus on engineering expertise. The Kovai DTH (down-thehole) hammers emerged as a cornerstone in his professional odyssey, showcasing his dedication to innovation. Hailing from Coimbatore, a modest city in southern India, Mr. Krishnaswamy rose from a family devoid of wealth, technical backgrounds, or any familiarity with technology. Graduating at the top of his class, stories recount his early struggles, walking miles with farm animals before school. Despite numerous hurdles which could have led an ordinary person to quit, his unwavering determination propelled him to pursue a higher education, graduating as a mechanical engineer from PSG College of Technology, renowned for its mechanical engineering program. Commencing his career as an engineer overseeing contract manufacturing, he transitioned into a government bank job, temporarily sacrificing his engineering passion. This strategic move provided flexibility and allowed him to save money, enabling him to embark on his entrepreneurial engineering journey part-time. In 1976, at the age of 25, he started his first machine shop with two lathes, subsequently expanding with additional machines for gear manufacturing. In 1991, he took a bold step and became the first contract manufacturer in south India with cutting-edge CNC (computer numerically controlled) machines when he founded Kovai CNC Applications. A visionary leader, he soon became the sought-after employer for mechanical engineers in the city. He expanded his operations to North India within a few years, serving the aerospace, energy, mining, and textile industries. A decade ago, in his early 60s, he aspired to innovate a product to transform the water well and mining industries. Being a computer savvy person, he learned CAD (computer-aided design) and advanced simulation modeling to optimize his product design. Despite life's hardships and setbacks, after hundreds of field trials, his unwavering spirit led to the successful creation of the Kovai DTH hammer, featuring innovative piston technology tailored for hard rock drilling. Following his untimely death, his son Dinesh and daughter Ashwini took charge of the business. All engineers, Dinesh and his wife Vidhya, along with Ashwini and her husband Hari, are committed to preserving the legacy and hard work that went into establishing Kovai Drilling Applications. The Kovai DTH hammer was formally introduced to customers in the USA during Groundwater Week in December 2023. Ashwini and her father. 12/6/1952 - 2/22/23 Lest we forget . . . Mr. Krishnaswamy said, “We at Kovai passionately innovate and engineer solutions for most critical and challenging problems in the industry. We strive for introducing world-class products that perform significantly better than what is available in the market.” WTR Hari, Ashwini, Vidhya, and Dinesh, are eager to continue Krishnaswamy’s legacy. “His passion for innovation and commitment to quality set the benchmark for our operations. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit inspires every project we undertake and every component we manufacture, serving as a timeless motivation for our team's pursuit of excellence.” said Hari.
