Peterson, Drilling Fluids Specialist As I mentioned a couple months ago, the drilling industry is arguably the oldest profession - or the second oldest. Well digging was first documented in the Bible in Genesis, when Abimilech told Abraham, “That they may be a witness unto me that I have digged this well.” We have advanced from hand-dug or scraped wells to spring pole, cable tool, rotary, and the myriad of drilling methods we have available to us today. In general, the methods we use, while different, are very interrelated and mostly vary in the way we maintain and stabilize the formation. We now have vibrasonic and casing advance systems which allow us to drill successfully in many areas that used to be very problematic or impossible to drill. We should always use the best method we have available to drill the well. Many of the advances we enjoy have only come about since the early 1900s, and are largely a product of the industrial age. We have similar advancement in how we can locate water to ensure the well will produce. Water witching is still out there and actually enjoys a great deal of success. We also have an ever-growing record base of offset wells and amazing logging systems to help our efforts be more successful. There are advances in bit design to help us more effectively and efficiently drill the well with fewer bit trips. Drilling fluid mixing and handling systems have improved reducing the amount of downtime required to mix and condition the drilling fluid. However, let’s not forget the improvement in dedicated personnel. We have a better ability to pass our knowledge along. As a result, the dedicated personnel coming into the industry are better able to take the existing knowledge and add to it from the enormous number of technological advances available. This accelerates innovations in the drilling industry and continues to improve the drilling operations and further increases our efficiency and success. This is a brief synopsis of advances in the drilling industry. The drilling industry continues to evolve and change as the available equipment and applicable chemistry changes. Thank-you to all of the dedicated and professional members of the drilling industry. Without you and your efforts, mankind would be in bad trouble since water is one of the three components needed to sustain life. May you all enjoy a memorable Holiday Season filled with friends, loved ones, and the best of holiday memories. Come back in 2025 rested and invigorated, ready to hit it again for another successful year. Always remember, “A man has to know his limitations,” but he doesn’t have to be defined by them. He can raise the bar. Working together, it is amazing where we can go. Let’s enjoy the trip! If you have any questions on drilling fluids or if you have another topic you would like addressed, please remember this column is ours. Your input helps me make it of value to you. It needs to be an interactive tool. I need your feedback. Please send your suggestions to Michele (below) and she will get them to me. Thank-you again for all you do! Enjoy the Holidays!
