The “Idiots” Corner by “Billy Bob Smith” Diets Statistics vary, but over 50% of U.S. children are overweight or obese; according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 40% of adults are or will be by 2025. Obviously, we have an eating problem in this country. So, as we enter another big food eating part of the year, I thought I would briefly touch base on this important topic, especially for all those out there who are eating too much stuff or the wrong stuff every day. But first: “Obesity affects every aspect of a people's lives, from health to relationships.” ~Jane Velez-Mitchell “The rise of childhood obesity has placed the health of an entire generation at risk.” ~Tom Vilsack “There is an obesity epidemic. One out of every three Americans . . .weighs as much as the other two.” ~Richard Jeni Okay, here are a few things to consider when hoping to lose weight: c Following every new fad diet that comes out with the full belief that this one, this one will work. c Think a temporary change in diet will have a permanent effect. c Reduce calories severely without changing the types of food that make up their intake. c Exercise a lot or focus on exercise more than their food intake (exercise does very little; diet is >90%). c The werewolf diet. Yes, this is a real thing. The werewolf diet limits how you eat based on the cycles of the moon, such as fasting with juice for 24 hours during a full moon and not eating past 6 p.m. during other moon phases. c The baby food diet calls for eating 10-15 jars of baby food for breakfast and lunch. Are you kidding me? Diets don’t work because the action of dieting is an unsustainable one. Most people who go on a diet will end up regaining the weight they lose, and usually more. According to the latest weight loss research, 95% of dieters end up regaining the weight they lost within two years. Calorie-restricting diets are often successful at helping people lose weight, but they’re very unsuccessful at helping people maintain the weight loss. Then there’s the “what the hell” effect. Studies have consistently revealed that dieting usually leads to weight gain, not weight loss. In a 2013 review published online in Frontiers in Psychology, investigators reported that 15 of 20 studies showed dieting predicted weight gain in adolescents and adults of normal weight. I could go on for pages about this subject, but I’m sure you have better things to do. So I will leave with a simple closing. If you are an overeater, eat the wrong stuff, or know someone who is guilty, why not consider the options - eat differently and live a better and longer life - or just keep going at the same pace and struggle with many aspects of life before you leave earlier!
