The “Idiots” Corner by “Billy Bob Smith” Well folks, it’s almost that special holiday for lovers, Valentine’s Day. So, I thought I would give you all a few ideas on what not to give, what to give, what not to do, and what to do. Please keep in mind I am not a relationship counsellor or guru, just an old guy who has made more than his share of mistakes, of bad gifts, and stupid gifts. How about a few quick quotes to lighten your day? A few stupid gifts - Trust me, it’s not how much you spend that determines the quality of the gift given, but the thought, awareness, or knowledge of his or her likes, dislikes, needs, wants, or desires. Two examples: I once gave the woman in my life a really expensive spa gift. Her response: “Do you think I am getting old or look fat - is this why you gave me this gift?” I also gave the special woman in my life a Valentine’s gift of a really big gift card - Duh! Her response: “Is this what gifts mean to you - money? How about something I like, or are you not aware of my likes and dislikes?” WOW - that hurt! How about the ladies? Once my lady gave me a gift card to get my car waxed. Hello . . . A few thoughtful gifts - Thoughtful gifts are about knowing what your man or lady likes, wants, needs, etc. Gifts are not about the value but the thought behind them. I know a gent who once gave his wife a CD he made of all of her favorite songs for this special day. It made her cry when she opened it. How about a day of manly chores doing all of her’s plus your own? A few stupid things - A friend of mine once gave a trip to the beach to his lady friend for the special day, but the problem was she didn’t like the beach. He did. So who was this gift really for? How about giving her lingerie? Is this for her or for you? How about giving him a special food membership? Does he need to lose weight, get in shape? Is this for him or you? I am sure you had enough of this and, if you look back over the years you’ve given and received some really stupid gifts for this holiday. My suggestion is simply to give her or him something that will make them smile, laugh, cry, hug you, or just say - “Honey, that was really special.” And it’s not about the money, it’s about knowing them - what they like, need, want, etc. and not what you want to give them driven by your agenda.
