7 JUNE 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Progress on Cleaning Up Liability Wells Adapted from Information by Alberta Energy Regulator Recently, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) published its 2022 Liability Management Performance Report. The online report is the first of what will be an annual publication on how the conventional gas and oil sector is managing the closure and cleanup of gas and oil wells, pipelines, and other facilities across the province. The report aims to improve transparency of industry’s management of conventional gas and oil liabilities, as well as develop performance measure baselines and ongoing assessments of the industry as a whole, and licensees specifically. As part of the new Liability Management Framework, the AER implemented the Inventory Reduction Program in 2022, which includes an industry-wide spend requirement and mandatory closure spend quotas for licensees in the gas and oil sector who have inactive liability (used to determine the licensee’s portion of the industry-wide spend requirement). Mandatory closure-spend quotas specify the minimum amount a licensee must spend on closure work each year. In 2022, the industry-wide spend requirement was $422 million. The industry closure-spend requirements for 2023 and 2024 were each set at $700 million. The report shows in 2022, industry spent $696 million on cleanup, exceeding the $422 million spend requirement by 65%. Additionally, 90% of licensees were compliant with their closure quota, leaving 51 noncompliant licensees with an outstanding amount of $4.2 million in missed closure quota. In total, more than $1.2 billion was spent on closure and cleanup activities in 2022. This includes industry spend and closure activities funded by the Government of Alberta’s Site Rehabilitation Program and the industry-funded Orphan Well Association. Industry operators continue to work on the backlog of inactive infrastructure. In 2022, the inactive well count decreased by 9% - from 91,000 to 83,000. Industry members are submitting closure spend data for 2023 and the report will be released before the end of the year. G&O Closure looks like:

8 JUNE 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® The Un-Comfort Zone II by Robert Evans Wilson, Jr. Three Keys to Cementing Personal Power In my last article, I wrote about the ways we give up our personal power and how we can take it back. This month, I’d like to expand on the concept of personal power and share several ways we can cement it into our lives. I previously wrote, “Personal or self-empowerment is all about taking charge of your life. Taking control. It means making conscious decisions and positive choices about your future, such as having goals and a purpose. It's about setting intentions and following through on them.” One of the best ways to stay in your power is to practice mindfulness, which is all about living in the present because it is only in the present you can control what is going on in your life. It is only now you can do anything about your current situation. It is the only time you can change anything. Focusing on the big picture can be overwhelming. It’s okay to have plans which include large goals in the future, but staying mindful can help you focus on just what you can do today (or if it is too much, then what you can do in the next hour) to move yourself forward toward your goals. In 1967, the rock band The Grassroots released an English version of the song Let’s Live for Today. It’s kind of a hedonistic hippy song, but I still like the refrain for its reminder to live mindfully: “Sha la la la la la live for today And don't worry 'bout tomorrow, hey hey hey” I have found the best, if not the most, fun ways to take charge of your life is to develop a habit of practicing the three Cs of personal empowerment: Creative Thinking, Critical Thinking, and Curiosity. Creative Thinking empowers you by opening up whole new avenues of opportunity. When you develop your creative thinking ability, you recognize more patterns and connections; you become a better problem-solver; you think faster on your feet; and it enables you to adapt to change and uncertainty. In brief, it makes you better prepared to deal with adversity because you are willing to think beyond the traditional approaches and find alternative solutions or answers. Creativity keeps us looking for ways to continually improve and grow. Critical Thinking enables you to evaluate, interpret, and analyze information. It empowers by teaching you to think on your own, which makes you self-reliant. Critical thinking can make you more open-minded and willing to learn new things, but it also encourages us to be wary of falsehoods. Critical thinking provides us with clarity, accuracy, and relevance when we encounter social pressure to accept the status quo. Curiosity fuels both creative and critical thinking because it encourages asking questions. It is a natural thirst for knowledge dating back to our cave-dwelling days when we had to continuously find things to eat while protecting ourselves from danger. It is a trait everyone has, but has often been suppressed by authorities that don’t want to be questioned. Curiosity encourages you to learn more about a particular topic/subject that has intrigued you which, in turn, empowers you with knowledge that can feed creativity or protect you from fake news. It serves as an alternative to making snap or biased judgments by encouraging you to learn more of the reasons behind any particular action or statement. And, when you combine mindfulness with curiosity it can make you a better listener which can lead to better acceptance of others’ opinions and beliefs. Curiosity also emboldens risk-taking because it allows us to learn more or have new experiences. Risk tolerance is important in innovation and in standing up for one’s moral values. Curiosity can even abate anxiety by encouraging you to dig deep to understand the cause. Being curious about your feelings can lead to exploring your emotions, which may lead you to a greater understanding of your subconscious needs and motivations. Tying all three of these empowerment activities together is the act of asking questions. Challenging the status quo, questioning authority, and not accepting everything you are told without adequate proof is a primary task in creative thinking, critical thinking, and curiosity. Finally, successfully using these three empowering skills will help you make conscious decisions. Successfully taking control of your life with these skills can make you feel good about yourself and heighten your self-confidence and self-esteem. 9 JUNE 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Expanding Production to Meet Increasing Demand Hobas Pipe USA, Inc., a leading manufacturer of corrosion-resistant fiberglass pipe products, announced an expansion of its production capabilities with the addition of a second manufacturing line. This expansion, set to be operational by October 1, 2024, increases capacity to meet the escalating demands of the water and wastewater infrastructure sectors. The expansion is another response to robust demand for Hobas’ high-quality, fiberglass reinforced polymer mortar pipes, particularly from municipal clients across the United States. The new production line will boost the company’s output by 50%, enhancing Hobas offerings for water and wastewater projects with large-diameter pipes ranging from 12 to 118 inches, and pressure ratings up to 500 psi. “In 2022, we increased our capacity to serve our municipal clients, particularly to address their pressure water needs and the response far exceed[s] our expectation,” said Martin Dana, president and CEO. “This new investment further emphasizes our commitment to the critical wet infrastructure landscape of North America. By continuing to select our pipe for their projects, our clients are making a statement - they want long-lasting solutions for their pipe needs; solutions that are corrosion resistant, last 150 years, reduce their energy consumption, and improve their impact on the environment.” These advancements have led to a 30% increase in Hobas’ workforce, with anticipated job growth exceeding 45% upon completion of capital initiatives. 14 JUNE 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Women’s PPE for the Construction Industry Adapted from Information by CONEXPO-CON/AGG 365 Personal protective equipment (PPE) is designed to protect workers from workplace hazards of all kinds. Historically, PPE has been designed with a male physique in mind, often leading to ill-fitting equipment for women. The need for appropriate PPE for women in the construction industry is not only a matter of equality but also safety. Sara Feuling, P.E., remembers being handed an extra large safety vest and being told it’s all they had on her first day working in construction. Her boss at the time didn’t see a problem, but with a vest that could fit two of her, Sara could see the dangers. Sara and her mother sewed up the extra large safety vest so it wouldn’t snag on anything while she worked. She is now Senior Director, Construction at Association of Equipment Manufacturers, where she often talks with a wide variety of women in all sectors of the construction industry. In 15 years, the construction industry has made “great progress” in women’s PPE said Sara, “but there is still a long way to go” to properly fitting PPE. A proposed Occupational Safety and Health Administration rule seeks to bring the construction industry’s PPE requirements in line with other industries that explicitly require equipment to fit properly. Hopefully this change will not only keep women, but workers of all sizes and shapes, safe. Manufacturers of PPE visited project sites to ask women about their needs and how to create products to keep them safe. With more options from manufacturers and understanding why it is important, women are more likely to receive proper fitting PPE. “I really do give the manufacturers a lot of credit there for really focusing more on the actual need of their customer,” said Sara. A lot of progress has been made to ensure the safety of women workers in the past 15-20 years. If companies have proper PPE options, and order proper gear, women might show up to work feeling safe on their first day. There is still a long road ahead for PPE being standard for women across all sectors of the large construction industry, but hopefully in the future women will not have the safety challenges they face with improper PPE. Construction contractors play a pivotal role in ensuring proper fitting PPE for women and all body types. Here are some ways they can contribute: j Offer training sessions on the importance of properly fitting PPE to educate employees how to select the right size and how to use it correctly. j Have a variety of PPE sizes and styles to accomodate different body types and offer allowance to buy anything not available on-site. j If needed, revise safety policies to include guidelines on PPE for women. j Conduct regular safety audits to ensure all workers are using PPE correctly and that it is providing the necessary protection. j Promote a safety first culture prioritizing safety above all else, where the proper use of PPE is seen as essential and nonnegotiable. j Management and senior staff should lead by example, by consistently using and advocating the correct use of properly fitting PPE. 15 JUNE 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Drilling Into Money Not Boring by Mark E. Battersby Buying, Renting, or Leasing Should a drilling contractor, supplier, distributor, or manufacturer buy, lease, or rent its equipment, vehicles, or facility? Not too surprisingly, the answer depends on the operation’s situation. Renting is often the best option for any drilling business in need of equipment for a short time or uncertain about its future use, especially for one-time use or seasonal contracts. Leasing equipment can be a good option for the owner or owners of a drilling operation with limited capital that needs equipment which must be replaced or upgraded every few years. Purchasing equipment might be a better option for an established business for equipment with a long, usable life. Buying means the operation purchases and owns the buildings, equipment, and vehicles outright. If funds are tight, there are financing tools available - including the offerings of dealers and distributors. Plus, there is also bank financing with or without Small Business Administration guarantees helping overcome the lender’s reluctance. Both loans and leases allow a drilling operation to immediately access equipment and other property, making it possible for those assets to generate revenue while the operation makes small periodic payments. In general, a loan is better if the operation has excess funds for a down payment and plans to keep the equipment for a long time. A lease is better if the operation doesn’t have money to put down, the equipment is only needed for a particular project, or if there is a risk of it becoming outdated. Thanks to a change in accounting rules, both private and nonprofit companies are now required to include all leases longer than 12 months on their balance sheets as assets and liabilities, increasing the visibility of leasing costs and arrangements on the bottom line of every drilling, supply, distribution, and manufacturing business. The new lease accounting standard ASC 842 does not really change how leases are treated for federal income tax purposes, but it does make accounting for leases more difficult - especially when trying to spell out the difference between tax and book income. Although the federal income tax treatment of leases isn’t impacted by ASC 842, the same can’t be said for state-based franchise taxes, sales and use taxes, and net worth taxes, all of which might be impacted. Choosing whether to rent, buy, or lease equipment or property requires careful evaluation of many facts and circumstances. Professional advice to help answer the question might be advisable. 16 JUNE 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® The Right to Repair . . . Ice Cream Machines? by Britt Storkson Owner, P2FlowLLC While surfing the net recently, I stumbled across this article having to do with the now legendary McDonald’s ice cream machine which, so the story goes, always seems to be in a nonworking state. See: https://townhall.com/columnists/bradslager/2024/03/22/the-legitimate-reason-for-the-governmentto-involve-itself-with-broken-mcdonalds-ice-cream-machines-n2636860?recip=20272765 In fact, I heard a comedian say: “It was so cold the McDonald’s ice cream machines started working!” First of all, I wonder about any business which would keep any piece of equipment that wasn’t working, wasn’t working right, or wasn’t working consistently. And, McDonald’s isn’t your average mom-and-pop restaurant either, as they are a multibillion dollar corporation with stores worldwide. If anyone would have the resources to fix something, they would. But I digress. Basically, this article is about the right to repair - with this case being ice cream machines - which is a topic I’ve written on before with the subject being farm equipment. All of those steps detailed in the article regarding how the ice cream is made and dispensed are not difficult for a microprocessor to perform. In fact, it’s what their current ice cream machine is using right now. So why not just bypass [the ice cream machine maker] Taylor entirely? I know there are legal and contractual issues here which I’m not qualified to comment on, but my guess as to why McDonald’s hasn’t done this yet is the decision makers at McDonald’s are all wrapped up with dealing with “the system” instead of being concerned about getting results. Trying to take on the system doesn’t do anything for getting good results which, in this case, is having a reliable ice cream machine. And it’s an incredible waste of time. I’ve encountered this “get all wrapped up in the minutiae and ignore the big picture” attitude in a number of different areas. A friend of mine works for a water treatment plant and they have fancy computer screens everywhere with a picture(s) of a water pump(s) on them with some information below them like pump pressure or rate of flow. The pump picture turns various colors to reflect the status of the pump. Why do we need a picture of a pump on a computer screen? All it does is increase the cost and complexity of the system and make it more difficult (and expensive) to troubleshoot and repair. An alphanumeric (letters and numbers) display would work just as well, be more reliable, and be a whole lot less expensive to implement. I can think of all sorts of things to illustrate this concept to absurd levels. What about your bathroom scale? Does a computerized bathroom scale need to ask you a lot of questions before it gives your weight? All you want to see is your weight at the time. That’s it. End of story. I can think of a lot of things a computer scale could do which could be a much better use of time resources - like logging your weight on a day-to-day basis and things like that. But until a significantly large number of people start pushing back against this attitude, nothing much is going to change. Until these costs (both time and money) become unbearable and the tipping point - wherever that is - is reached, not much will happen. But time will tell. Next-generation geothermal technologies offer several advantages over other forms of clean energy - including its potential to complement wind and solar projects, ability to be deployed beyond hot and temperate regions, versatility to match local demand, and capacity to create new high-paying quality jobs. Geothermal heat can be used for industrial processes, mineral production, as well as aquaculture and agricultural applications, energy storage, and hydrogen production. It is especially suitable for energy-intensive direct air capture facilities and data centers. “With a highly skilled workforce already trained in the technologies of this emerging industry, New Mexico is ready to lead the nation in the deployment of geothermal energy,” said Heinrich. “By breaking down barriers that are preventing companies from fully harnessing the power of geothermal energy, my bipartisan GEO Act builds on the successful efforts our state has advanced to unlock this new, carbon emissionfree energy source. This is how we will accelerate our clean energy future, grow our economy, lower costs for working Americans, and create more high-quality jobs that New Mexicans can build their families around.” New Mexico ranks sixth in the nation for geothermal resource availability. According to Lee, this bill will take away the bureaucratic obstacles which have suppressed innovation and investment in geothermal technology. “Our legislation will streamline the permitting process, making geothermal energy a more feasible option for supplying baseload power to communities across the United States, including Utah, which stands on the brink of becoming a leader in geothermal innovation. Through this bipartisan effort, we are preparing for a future where geothermal power plays a key role in our energy strategy,” he explained. The GEO Act would put geothermal projects on an equal footing with gas and oil projects on public land, and direct the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Forest Service to develop a streamlined process for geothermal observation well permits on public land. The bill also creates a Geothermal Ombudsman and Strike Team to provide additional resources for field offices. Additionally, it sets new geothermal lease targets on federal lands and require the BLM and Forest Service to hold auctions more frequently than every two years. The GEO Act, which would amend the Geothermal Steam Act of 1970, will streamline the permitting process, expand development leasing, and provide much-needed resources to get more geothermal power onto the grid. Supporters believe this Act will cut the initial permitting process from its current 7-10 years, to a year or less. Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the atmosphere or between the atmosphere and the ground. In the initial stages of development, air acts as an insulator between the positive and negative charges in the cloud and between the cloud and the ground; however, when the differences in charges becomes too great, this insulating capacity of the air breaks down and there is a rapid discharge of electricity we know as lightning. It can occur between opposite charges within a thunderstorm cloud or between opposite charges in the cloud and on the ground. A conventional lightning rod’s basic function is to attract the lightning to lead it to the earth (grounding it). The basic function of the Dinnteco system (DDCE) is to avoid the lightning in the first place, and any impact it may have on the structure the DDCE is protecting. The technology of the DDCE ensures the structure protected by it does not generate upward tracers and therefore there are no lightning impacts on either the DDCE or the structure it protects. This effect is achieved by generating a continuous compensation of the electric field in its immediate surroundings (continuously generating a small current leakage to the ground), acting as a sink for variable radio frequency electric charges, which means no saturation of electrostatic charges or of the electric field can occur in its environment. It does not generate any destructive effects of any kind on the electric, electronic, and other equipment within the structure. G&O

21 JUNE 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Safety by Ronald B. Peterson Drilling Products Specialist, Mountainland Supply Company When I first went to work in the gas and oil industry, if you were on call, it meant 24/7. If your phone rang - regardless of the time or weather - you were usually going to be on the way to work, and you better be getting dressed, because how ever far from the rig you were, you were already that late. It meant there was a problem and people’s lives could be at risk and time was of the essence. Very often, they had drilled into a gas zone and had an uncontrolled gas flow. Safety had to be our focus - and it is still the same today. It’s not just our safety, but the safety of everyone around us. This includes coworkers and both invited and uninvited people on our jobsite. We should always make sure we are in the best condition we can be - both mentally and physically - to deal with the unexpected, that our equipment is in proper operating condition, and we have thoroughly planned for the unexpected. Safety incidents almost always cost significant amounts of money, time, and often jobs. Taking time to evaluate and implement proper protocol is key to avoiding issues in the future. A little bit of preplanning and preparation can save a lot of heartache. We work in a high-energy environment where things can and often do happen quickly. We need to look over our workplace and determine any potential risks. This includes obvious and not so obvious situations. We need to make sure any risks are properly marked, appropriate guards are in place, and access is limited whenever appropriate. We have made significant advancements in safety protocol over the years, and while we have come a long way, we still have room for improvement. The most important thing we can expect from any project is for everyone to complete their assigned tasks and return home safely and unharmed. Safety should be emphasized and recognized as our number one priority. It needs to be a natural and automatic part of our life. We need to always emphasize the importance of completing every job safely with no one injured or hurt. We should always err on the side of caution. If there is any doubt, play it safe!!! It is my belief that we borrow the earth’s water and other resources from our descendants; therefore, we need to do everything we can to leave things in better shape than when we found them. Never underestimate the value and importance of the drilling industry in our lives. You are all a vital and critical part of our existence. Thank you for all you do and for your dedication and support. This is a great industry. Ron Ron Peterson may be contacted via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com G&O

22 JUNE 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® San Xavier Underground Mining Laboratory Adapted from Information by the University of Arizona The Henry G. “Hank” Grundstedt San Xavier Mining Laboratory has one of the nation’s most sophisticated research hoisting systems, two declines for access of rubber-tired vehicles, legacy rail haulage access, and the only mining lab with a working vertical shaft in the United States. The mine operated from 1880 until 1952, producing silver, lead, zinc, and copper. The laboratory for research and training has been operated by the University of Arizona Department of Mining and Geological Engineering (MGE) since 1958, and owned by the university since 1975. The department renamed the mine for MGE alumnus and benefactor Hank Grundstedt in 2005. Located on a 90-acre facility, the four-level mine is 250 feet at its deepest. It’s a modern resource for students, industry representatives, and community members. Working with the latest technology in mining and excavation, students get hands-on experience in mine development, unit operations, and maintenance, which help students prepare for international mining competitions as well as jobs in the industry. The San Xavier lab is structured like an operating mine, where all supervisory positions are held by undergraduate students such as mine manager, safety manager, and shift foremen. The mine features four levels of underground workings to help mining and geology students gain hands-on hard hat experience along with mine rescue and recovery exercises. In addition to running the working San Xavier mine, mining engineering students hold multiple internships with mining, petroleum, and gas companies. The School of Mining and Mineral Resources jointly administered by the College of Science and the College of Engineering, is bringing together students, professionals, and communities across disciplines and boundaries to meet the complex challenges of sustainability to make a safer, cleaner domestic mineral supply chain. MGE hosts community tours and activities and conducts K-12 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) outreach at the mine to educate the general public on the importance of the mineral and construction industries. The underground mining lab has long been a training and research resource for federal and state agencies, as well as organizations devoted to underground research, tunnel safety, and mine rescue. The university and the Laborers’ International Union of North America established a cooperative health and safety training program for underground construction and tunneling workers. Since 2000, more than 300 miners from across seven states have participated in these training programs. Thanks to decades of mining industry partnerships, the university today is considered a center of excellence in mine health and safety. MIN
