32 JUNE 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® The Snap-on® GLASS70BYEAR Safety Glasses with built-in ear plugs offer amber-tinted eye protection lenses in ergonomic, comfort-fit black frames. The lenses absorb ultraviolet rays, are impact rated, antifog, and antiscratch for work or play. The added benefit of wearing these safety glasses is ear protection is always at-the-ready with integrated ear plugs which easily retract into the temple pieces. The Snap-on® SOSG6 Sledgehammer Safety Glasses come with adjustable-length temples and in small, regular, and large sizes for a customizable fit. These made-in-the-USA safety glasses offer military-grade impact protection, interchangeable lens shields, and include UPCL (Universal Prescription Lens) options for automotive work, military applications, hunting, shooting, driving, fishing, motorcycling, and boating, as well as other outdoor or work activities. These products make work easier and safer for professionals performing critical tasks. Rapid Advancement of Geothermal Performance Adapted from Information by Fervo Energy In 2022, Fervo Energy successfully completed the well test at its fullscale commercial pilot, Project Red, where well tests confirmed the commercial viability of Fervo’s drilling technology. In just two years, Fervo Energy drilling operations at a new site called Cape Station has shown significant reduction in drilling times, paving the way for rapid geothermal performance exceeding the Department of Energy’s (DOE) expectations. These results signal readiness for the continued commercialization and substantiates the rapid learning in the geothermal industry. In June 2023, Fervo began its drilling campaign at Cape Station, a 400megawatt project in southwest Utah. They successfully drilled one vertical and six horizontal wells, rapidly reducing drilling times between wells. Though Cape wells are hotter and over 2100 feet deep, Fervo drilled its fastest Cape well in just 21 days, a 70% reduction in drilling time at the first horizontal well drilled at Project Red. With Fervo drill efficiency, the drilling costs across the first four horizontal wells at Cape have been significantly reduced from $9.4 million to $4.8 million per well. “In just six months, we have proven that our technology solutions have led to a dramatic acceleration in forecasted drilling performance,” said Tim Latimer, Fervo Energy CEO and cofounder. Outpacing the National Renewable Energy Laboratory 2035 projections for moderate technology improvement, Fervo sustained an average rate of penetration (ROP) of 70 feet/hour on the fourth horizontal well drilled at Cape. Fervo used PDC (polycrystalline diamond compact) drill bits to cut through hard, abrasive granite, while mud coolers counteracted high subsurface temperatures which have historically derailed geothermal exploration. “When you operate continually and understand the resource, you dramatically streamline operations. That’s the unique value of Fervo’s approach to enhanced geothermal,” said Trey Lowe, chief technology officer of Devon Energy. These results underscore the importance of using gas and oil technology to enhance geothermal. “We now have the best drilling technology from the petroleum drilling industry. What encourages me now is that we’re starting to learn how to use it in ways that specifically maximize performance,” said Fred Dupriest, “professor of engineering practice at Texas A&M University and former chief drilling engineer at ExxonMobil. “Performance isn’t just what you use, but how you use it. We’re not just achieving technology transfer, but an impressive rate of knowledge transfer in how to use it.” GEO Mountain States 2024 Dealmakers Paul Chavez with LifeWater of Española, New Mexico, and Levi with Pulstar / Preferred Pump, were proud to show the new Pulstar P10 pump hoist mounted on a Ford F-550 at the 2024 Mountain States Ground Water Expo.
