27 MARCH 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Believe in Yourself by Tim Connor Over the years, I had a variety of people do their best to cause me pain or have a negative impact on who I was, or who I was becoming. I’ll give you just one example. My first boss, who was the executive director of a national association, came back from a yearly meeting and told the staff that since he could not convince the board he deserved a raise in pay, for the next 12 months, all our salaries would remain the same also. So I walked into his office (just to confirm since I had been employed there for three years and in a management position supervising three people and responsible for 35% of the organization’s income), and asked: “So, since you can’t get a raise, none of us can, regardless of our effort, contribution, and ability?” He confirmed yes, it was. I had to be absolutely positive he meant it, so I then asked: “So my salary has nothing to do with how competent I am, but how convincing you are?” Then after his second “Yep,” I told him my letter of resignation would be on his desk by the end of the day. Trust me, with three kids, a lot of bills, and no job opportunities, you might think it was a stupid decision, and at the time you may have been right. If that were to become my life philosophy “You are in charge of me,” well, I would not, at this point in my life, have given over 4000 presentations in 29 countries, to over a million people, have 75 books published, and sold in 20 countries. Not bragging here, just trying to make a point that you too must believe in yourself, no matter what, and not let your life be controlled by a spouse, boss, customer, neighbor, or parent. You were not put on this earth for the approval of others - period. When you lose control of you, you lose control of life, who you are, who you will become, what you can accomplish, etc. Do you think all great inventors, business creators, and famous founders, leaders, etc. let others be in charge of them? I doubt it!
