Yes, with all the sun’s rays ready to tan those who want to spend their days outside gardening, boating, fishing, on a cruise ship reading that favorite magazine (WorldWide of course), and dreaming of what great things you have for your company for the rest of the year. Sure you are. I bet you are saying to yourself, “How can I make this summer life continue?” With so many of you with plans for the summer already, you will notice there are not too many trade events happening during May, June, and July. So go ahead and take a break - I am referring to our hard-working sales reps who travel the world with the wares of the companies they represent. One cannot deny, we love to see those folks out on the trade show trail, but they too deserve a break every once in a while. So here is a “HATS OFF TO YOU” from all of us at WorldWide Drilling Resource, Inc. You are always in our hearts and prayers for your safety and that of your families and friends as well. We certainly appreciate your efforts. For the rest of us who enjoy the summer’s time sitting on the back porch after work with a cool drink, looking out over the scenery (mountains for some, lakeviews for others, and then some watching their children and grandchildren enjoying the pool), and don’t forget ever faithful “FIDO”, or our favorite cat, “SISTER KITTY”, who always wait patiently for us to get home night after night. It’s their time now too. OKAY - SNAP OUT OF IT! This is a great time to really plan what your next move is to improve our workplaces, increase our ever hard-to-find employees, and let the ones who have stood by us for so very long know how much we appreciate them and their efforts. It does take a village, a team, or whatever you want to call those who make the company move forward for the benefit of everyone at the company, as well as all our customers and acquaintances. Trust me, I know firsthand - - - and was told many years ago by our accountant Al Crippen while living in Gainesville, Florida, while he was sitting alone in his office, “Ronnie, I got upset and turned around and the only one in the office here was me. Just make sure as you go forward, you let everyone working for you know - they are actually working ‘with you’; and you will not turn around and be the only one in your office.” Good words to live by, from a very smart man. So, be sure as you go through your office, your shop, out on the jobsite, you stop and speak to those you work “with”, and let them know how much you care. YOU WILL SEE A SMILE COME ACROSS THEIR FACES - and that will MAKE YOUR DAY. SAY ~ Happy Mother’s Day to all our special mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts . . . maybe someone we know, and give them a reason to smile too.

9 MAY 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® $39 Million Contract for Loaders JCB North America secured the bid for the U.S. Marine Corp’s MultiTerrain Loader Replacement program and was awarded a contract to supply up to 206 of its 3TS-8T Teleskid telescopic compact track loaders. The Teleskid features a telescoping boom with a hinge pin height of 13 feet, 3 inches, more than 2 feet higher than most conventional skid steers. The loader has a rated operating capacity of up to 3700 pounds and a travel speed of 7.8 mph. Compared to a conventional skid steer or compact track loader, the Teleskid offers side-door entry which increases visibility and enhances safety by providing a quick and obstacle-free exit rather than forcing the operator to enter and exit over the front of the machine and attachment. Chris Giorgianni, vice president of product for JCB North America said, “This contract demonstrates the quality and versatility of our machines, which are designed to meet the most demanding and challenging environments, whether it’s supporting the military mission or allowing our commercial customer to just get the job done. We are honored to support the Marine Corps and all branches of the U.S. military in their vital work of protecting and serving our country and its allies.” The contract also includes a selection of attachments. The Teleskid is designed, engineered, and manufactured in Savannah, Georgia, which also produces the commercial machine sold globally. The military and commercial versions of the JCB Teleskid are nearly identical. 10 MAY 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® A Culture of Fun by Tim Connor I once worked with a client in the Chicago area. One day during lunch, several of the employees were playing Frisbee out behind the plant. The president came out and asked what they were doing. One employee replied, “We are on our lunch break and we are playing.” The president then said, “This is a place of business, not a playground. You are here to work, not have fun.” I couldn’t believe my ears. As a trainer for over 35 years, I can say I have never before or since heard such a ridiculous remark from the president of a $50 million-a-year business. (Well, maybe I’ve heard a lot of others that come close.) So you ask, “What’s the big deal?” Some of you may believe the president was right in his attitude. I can only tell you that when people work in a fun environment (and I don’t mean playing Frisbee in the halls) they will: , Be more productive. , Make fewer mistakes. , Get along better with everyone. , Tend to have more loyalty to the organization. , Give you the labor of their hearts - not just their hands. , Release their stress in a productive way rather than on a customer or fellow employee. , Come in early and leave late. They will not be driven by the clock, but by the project, assignment, or task. The opposite of many of these is also true in an environment filled with mistrust, lack of respect, stress, politics, gameplaying, and heavy top-down policies, decisions, communication, and objectives. In a labor market where good people are hard to find (and I will even say any employees are hard to find), it makes sense to treat employees as your most valuable asset. Generally employees today: Are smarter - Have more options - Want to be respected, trusted, and accepted - Don’t need your job as much as you think they do. How would you describe your organization’s environment? Is it a fun place to work? Do employees look forward to Monday, or Friday? Have you ever asked them? You really don’t have to because their performance, attitude, productivity, communication style, creativity, willingness to take responsibility, morale, and results are (or will be) a fairly accurate barometer. If your organization is grounded in seriousness, ego, satisfaction, emotional manipulation, secrecy, or any other negative approach, I guarantee most of your employees are not enjoying the time they spend at work. Want to ensure a positive, passionate, exciting atmosphere? Develop a fun mindset from the top down and I guarantee you’ll put more money in the bank at the end of the year. 11 MAY 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Core Drilling Reveals the World’s Oldest Forest Compiled by Sophia Henline, Editorial Assistant, WorldWide Drilling Resource® Earth is such an amazing place, with so many mysteries yet to be discovered. The drilling industry has helped in many discoveries when it comes to our world. One of those was the unveiling of the oldest forest in the world, which is located at a quarry in Cairo, New York. This forest, said to be 385 million years old, was home to millipede-like bugs and other insects. Dinosaurs would not appear on earth for another 150 million years. Charles Ver Straeten, along with colleagues Linda Van Aller Hernick and Frank Mannolini, were scouting the area, when Charles’ eye caught a pattern in the stone of the old quarry. What he saw in the stone were wandering gutters, a feature common in marine rocks. As he walked, he traced 11 lines leading to a single point. He realized the lines showed roots of an ancient and very large tree. With this discovery, researchers believe there is much to learn from these ancient root impressions. Dr. William Stein, associate professor of biology at the State University at Binghamton, and his team of researchers were there when core drilling operations at the Cairo site discovered three unique root systems. Stein and his team hypothesized the forest of the Devonian Period were mixed with different trees, occupying different places depending on local conditions. They identified a tree-like palm tree called Eospermatopteris. Its roots had limited range and probably lived a year or two before dying. These trees reached about 30 feet tall, lacked wood, and looked like ferns. Researchers also found evidence of a tree called Archaeopteris. This tree reproduced by releasing spores into the air, but it had early hints at developing into a seed plant. Did you know that Archaeopteris were the first known plant to form leaves and were large woody plants formed from secondary tissues? With its modern underground system, the tree was able to continue to expand its roots, accommodating continuous growth of a long-lived larger type of tree. “Archaeopteris seems to reveal the beginning of the future of what forests will ultimately become,” said Stein. Scale trees were the third root system to be found, which surprised researchers. Those trees belong to the class called Lycopsida, which was thought to only exist during the Carboniferous Period. Lycopsid trees were related to modern club mosses and horsetails. This forest would have featured trees as tall as 65 feet, trunks over 4 feet in diameter, with smaller trees and plants growing between them. To investigate geochemical changes, scientists drilled into the fossil soil between the root system. With the tree’s discovery, we now know the crucial role they played in altering earth’s climate, by absorbing carbon dioxide and the impact it had on development of the Devonian Ice Ages. Three-inch cores were drilled to depths ranging from three feet to nine feet. The cores were cut in half longitudinally, with half conserved at the New York State Museum. The half sampled for further study at the University of Sheffield and National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, UK, are now permanently housed at Cardiff University. With researchers unearthing multiple fish fossils, they theorized, a massive flood was the cause of the forest demise. 12 MAY 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Unmatched Benefits of OEM Parts Adapted from Information by Ingersoll Rand Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts stand as the optimal choice for sustaining peak compressor reliability and performance. While imitation parts might seem like a fit, it's the internal integrity which truly matters. Explore four key advantages of opting for genuine OEM parts: 1. Lower Total Cost of Ownership: Choosing non-OEM parts may offer initial savings, but their shorter life span results in double the expenses over time - both in parts and labor. 2. Precision to Equipment Specs: OEMs design their parts and equipment, ensuring replacement products adhere to exact specifications for a flawless fit and function at the highest quality standards. 3. Extended Equipment Warranties: Certain OEMs extend coverage on the airend for operations using their OEM parts. This often includes maintenance services which can help keep operations running longer to decrease downtime. 4. Safety and Risk Management: Qualified OEM parts function as designed, ensuring safe operations. NonOEM parts, when ill-fitting or malfunctioning, compromise efficiency and jeopardize compressor reliability. In Memoriam Lester Eugene Funk (1940 ~ 2023) It is with deepeest sadness, we recently learned of the loss of our dear friend, Lester, at age 82. Whether it be late or on time, we want to be sure we honor his memory. He was born December 7, 1940, the son of Eldon and Margaret Funk. A 1958 graduate of Big Spring High School, and a United States Air Force Veteran, Lester was the former owner of Funks Drilling and Water Treatment, now owned by his sons. Lester, a true entrepenuer, was also owner of Funk Manufacturing/Up-Z-Dazy, a Newburg, Pennsylvania, manufacturing company of well pump pullers. His favorite places were Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and his home in Florida. Hunting, fishing, boating, and skiing were his hobbies, he will be remembered for his great sense of humor. On a personal note, Lester was that kind of special friend you could see smiling across the room as evidenced in photos taken here at JUBILEEs in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, through the years. Each time I saw him, he beamed with delight and told me how many times he enjoyed seeing Doc Faison and me during events, and what a special friendship we had. He just enjoyed life and his passion for the Up-Z-Dazy. My special prayers and thoughts go out to his wife Lisa, who stood by his side and was always a beacon of sunshine for him. He truly was a blessed man. Lester is also survived by his three sons David, Brian, and Eric; stepsons, Ryan and Dwayne Gutshall; several grandchildren; as well as sisters Vonnie Heishman and Mary Ann Gift; and of course nieces and nephews. Lester was preceded in death by his parents. The management and staff of WWDR extend their sincerest sympathies to Lester’s family, friends, and former colleagues. 14 MAY 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Universities Go Geothermal Adapted from Information by Igne Institutions are increasingly seeking innovative and sustainable solutions to reduce their carbon footprint. By adopting ground source geothermal heat, Britain’s universities can retroactively decarbonize their campuses. Igne’s geothermal energy solutions are a sustainable way for Britain’s universities to do just that. This will position the institutions as attractive choices for conscientious students who prioritize environmental responsibility. Geothermal energy comes from the earth’s own internal heat, which can be used to warm buildings, produce hot water, and even generate electricity. During the hot summer months, the heat pump technology also works in reverse, therefore it will cool the school. Ground sourced geothermal heat involves extracting heat from the earth’s crust through a network of pipes buried beneath the surface, known as a closed loop. Where space is limited, an open-loop solution is ideal as it hardly takes any surface area. To provide a cost-effective and efficient way to transition toward sustainability, retroactive fitting involves installing necessary geothermal infrastructure beneath the ground. This infrastructure would harness an energy source without compromising the aesthetic or functionality of the building. This process can be seamlessly integrated into existing heating and cooling systems. Today’s students are increasingly environmentally conscious. Embracing ground source geothermal heat, could be a unique selling point for prospective students. Institutions are likely to attract a growing demographic of students who seek an education aligned with their values and a campus that prioritizes environmental responsibility. These systems require minimal maintenance, and universities can enjoy long-term cost savings on energy bills. Igne has extensive experience and expertise in delivering geothermal energy projects. Setting an example for other sectors, universities can become pioneers in the global movement toward a carbon-neutral future. I Wonder! As we approach spring around the country, I was wondering if idiots were always happy or only when the world conforms to their rules and expectations. So I did some research I thought I would share which might help you identify the idiots in your life. First, a definition of happiness from my perspective - not that you really care. “Happiness is not where you live, where you work, who you are with, what you own, or how many toys you have. Happiness is what you bring to all of these things.” These things create pleasure and there is a real difference between pleasure and happiness. Yes, being rich can make you happy, but if this is so, why are so many rich people unhappy? If lots of toys can make you happy, then why are so many people who have lots of toys miserable? Don’t believe me? Check the statistics. Okay, so what makes idiots happy? Here are a few to consider: • Being critical - of both them and others. Why this one? If no one is perfect, they don’t have the right to be happy. • Living beyond their means. Why? If they buy things they can’t afford, with money they don’t have, they can blame others for their lack and not take responsibility. • Addictions. I don’t care if it’s booze, drugs, sex, or food, addictions give us something or someone to blame for our life conditions, circumstances, or issues. • Living with regrets. Taking responsibility is a wise and mature trait, but idiots, if they do, can’t point the finger at anyone or the outside world. • Worriers. Worry is driven by insecurity, the need for control, impatience, and many other negative traits. So why do idiots worry? It’s simple, they can always have an excuse for everything they can’t take responsibility for, and this helps them keep their unrealistic happiness - or should I say unhappiness.? • Letting fear control their behaviors. We all have fears from time to time. It’s not always wise and is quite normal, but idiots? Their fear is routed in weakness, uncertainty, and lack of maturity. • Giving up on goals or dreams. Quitting is not always easy. Many of us who have given up in the past often regret the action, but idiots? No, they in general are constant quitters, or they don’t start things they know won’t work, or they will have to go off in the future. • Gossiping. Saying nasty things about others, spreading bad news or someone’s secrets, sometimes even just nodding or agreeing with another person or group about something about others can be gossip. Why does this trait bring idiots to perceive happiness? Simple - they are always better than everyone else. • Holding grudges. We all, sooner or later, have a grudge about something or someone, but all the time? Consistently? Everyone? Only idiots can find valid reasons to hold someone else, something else, or life in general for their circumstances, consequences, or life outcomes. • Blaming others. Idiots love to blame others. Why? Well for starters, they are never wrong - it’s always someone else or even life at fault. Yes, there are many other traits and circumstances which contribute to an idiot’s false happiness, but try confronting them with reality and now you are the idiot! Billy Bob Contact him via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com “Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.” ~Marcus Aurelius Antoninus “If someone bases his/her happiness on major events like a great job, huge amounts of money, a flawlessly happy marriage, or a trip to Paris, that person isn’t going to be happy much of the time. If, on the other hand, happiness depends on a good breakfast, flowers in the yard, a drink, or a nap, then we are more likely to live with quite a bit of happiness.” ~Andy Rooney “Happiness depends upon ourselves. ~Aristotle
Association Need Help? 850-547-0102 - Ronnie 19 MAY 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® One Major HDD Crossing Done, Two More Ahead Adapted from Information by NRL Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) is executing the mega project of laying its Paradip Numaligarh Crude Oil Pipeline (PNCPL), a cross-country pipeline of over a thousand miles, from Paradip Port in Odisha to Numaligarh, along with expansion of its refinery, as part of the Numaligarh Refinery Expansion Project (NREP). The prestigious NREP is the single largest investment in Northeast India as part of the government of India's Hydrocarbon Vision 2030. The pipeline passes through five states traversing numerous crossings, including all major rivers of East India - namely Ganga, Jia Bharali, Subansiri, and Brahmaputra - utilizing horizontal directional drilling (HDD) with each intersection. Subansiri River, which connects Lakhimpur in the north and Majuli in the south, was one of the challenging HDD sites due to its complex, over two-mile-long profile length for a 26-inch-diameter pipe. The remote site made it more challenging due to the inaccessibility of the area which remains flooded most of the year, leaving a working window of 4 to 5 months during November to March. The contractor had to construct a temporary bridge over Lohit River for movement of the heavy equipment and project accessories. Two giant rigs were positioned on both sides of the river and were used for drilling, reaming, and pulling activities. Once pulling of the pipe started, it and continued nonstop for around 60 hours until the entire pipe string was pulled through, marking the successful completion of one of the largest HDD projects globally for a 26-inch pipe size. With completion of this HDD, NRL is now focusing on accomplishing another two large HDD projects this year in Ganga and Brahmaputra River, to conclude all major HDD crossings of the PNCPL. Plans are to complete construction and commissioning of the PNCPL by mid-2025. DIR

22 MAY 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® The Bouncer by Rick Jordan Retired Mineral Processing Engineer I’ve never thought of myself as a tough guy. While growing up, I had my share of fights in the neighborhood, but was never feared by other kids my age. I took up boxing while in high school and was a fair fighter. I didn’t have a stellar record, but I won more fights than I lost. Anyway, although most of the girls I dated would probably not concur, I considered myself more a lover than a fighter. I got a call from my brother-in-law one Saturday morning. He was a board member at a local athletic club (a classy name for a bar that sponsors a softball team) and there was a bad fight the night before which left the club in shambles and the bartenders bruised. He asked if I would be interested in being the bouncer that evening. I told him my fighting days were behind me and I had absolutely no desire to be a bouncer. My brother-in-law drove a hard bargain - informing me the bouncer’s beer would be free all night. I arrived at the club at around 7:45 that evening. Most of the stools at the bar were taken, but the crowd seemed wellbehaved. I sauntered up to the bar and informed the bartender I was the bouncer and would be drinking Lucky Lager. He rolled his eyes and mumbled, “Yeah, right.” I was surprised by his disrespect, but I let the remark slide. We bouncers tend to be thick skinned. He gave me the beer. Well, I quaffed free beer for several hours, feeling a little tougher with each brew. Finally, at just around midnight, a fight broke out. I sprang (more like stumbled) into action and started shoving my way through the crowd that had gathered around the scuffle saying, “Coming through. I’m the bouncer.” The guy in front of me turned around and said, “No, I’m the bouncer.” The guy to my left proclaimed, “I’m the bouncer.” Apparently, the fight the night before had a profound impact on the club’s board of directors because each one, unbeknownst to the others, had called in a friend or two to be bouncers. It seemed the only two male people in the bar who weren’t bouncers were the two poor souls who decided to fight. Of course, we disposed of the fighters quite quickly, then gathered at the bar telling each other about how tough we were. I woke up the next day with a serious hangover, but also with a sense of pride - for I was a bouncer. Rick Rick Jordan may be contacted via e-mail to michele@ worldwidedrillingresource.com
23 MAY 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Safety Near the Water Adapted from Information by U.S. Department of Labor Mine Safety & Health Administration From 2010 through 2023, there has been 19 drowning deaths in the mining industry. Eleven of those deaths happened when mobile equipment, operating near water, became submerged. In Indiana, one mining operation experienced how safety and following procedures on a jobsite is very important. A man with 23 years of experience lost his life when his haul truck traveled through a berm and became submerged in a pond. His supervisor assigned him a task of hauling material from a previously built ramp to the exit road spoil pile. One witness was on his way from the exit road spoil pile when he observed dust, rocks, and a green haul truck going down the spoil pile. He got on the radio and called to the plant operator and told him what he saw. Another haul truck operator heard the radio traffic, traveled to the dump site, and noticed the berm was broken. He told the plant operator his finding and they contacted 911. The accident investigation team conducted an examination of the scene, interviewed miners, management, and reviewed conditions and work practices relevant to the accident. The haul truck operators were dumping materials over the edge of the exit road spoil pile at the time of the accident. Measurements of the berm were taken after the accident, which revealed heights ranging from 21 inches to 38 inches. The haul truck had a mid-axle height of 52 inches. The mine operator built the berms with dirt and rocks that came to a narrow, tapered point at the top which investigators determined were unsubstantial. Tire tracks on the berm revealed haul truck operators were backing up to, and contacting the berm when dumping. The haul truck flipped down the 71% slope of unconsolidated materials, coming to rest in the water approximately 350 feet east of the dump site. Investigators determined the mine operator did not ensure the berm at the dump site impeded the haul truck from overtravel, which contributed to the accident. The investigation team also determined the mine operator did not conduct an adequate workplace examination. When working near water, mine operators should conduct workplace examinations, keep equipment a safe distance from the water’s edge, and ensure miners wear a seatbelt when operating mobile equipment. Mining companies could provide the following devices to increase miners’ chances of survival if they fall into water: j Provide emergency underwater breathing devices to miners with risk of falling into the water. j Train miners in the use of underwater breathing devices in case of an emergency. j Keep water rescue equipment easily accessible. j To assist miners in exiting a submerged cab, develop an underwater emergency egress kit which may include a nose clip, mask, underwater breathing device, personal flotation device (PFD), and glass breaking device. j Provide and ensure miners wear a Coast Guard approved PFD.
