33 MAY 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® GEFCO’s Drill School Returns Adapted from Information by BAUER Group In response to the growing demand for skilled professionals in the water well drilling industry, GEFCO reprised its Drill School, a comprehensive five-day training course designed to equip students with the theoretical and practical skills necessary to excel in the field. As the second GEFCO Drill School is being conducted April 29th - May 3rd, we wanted to provide highlights of what Drill School looks like by detailing the first Drill School. GEFCO hosted Drill School February 26th - March 1st at BAUER Equipment America in Conroe, Texas, located in Conroe Park North, the city’s premiere industrial park. Organized by BAUER Certified Training Partner, Bruce Bradley, Drill School provides students with a unique opportunity to receive hands-on training and professional instruction from industry experts, such as Jim Smith of Fleming College. Drill School is tailored to individuals who are seeking to improve their knowledge on water well drilling, offering an immersive learning experience covering every aspect of the drilling process. From understanding geological formations to operating drilling equipment effectively and safely, the curriculum is meticulously crafted to provide students with a holistic understanding of the industry. Drill School began with in-class sessions in the training room of the new manufacturing facility, covering the theoretical portion of the course. A well-crafted presentation was shown to students outlining the training, explaining the different applications and classifications of all GEFCO drill rigs and compatible components, techniques, and much more. Along with in-class sessions, students were treated to an exclusive showcase of additional drills manufactured by BAUER, such as KLEMM and BG rigs, which were used to prepare the demonstration area for Drill School. The collaboration between product lines creates a synergy between GEFCO’s rigs and the various equipment offered at BAUER Equipment America, with a diverse array of drilling methods to meet the evolving needs of the industry. Whether the student was a newcomer to the field, an experienced driller looking to enhance skills, or an administrator wanting an up-close view of an operating rig, the course offered a valuable opportunity to all wanting to expand their knowledge. Faith Smith of Sam’s Well Drilling was excited to see the GEFCO 90K operate in person for the first time and learn more about the geological aspects of water well drilling saying, “I learned a lot more about geology which is something that I need to better understand when working in the office and creating construction reports.” During Drill School, a GEFCO 90K drill rig owned by Skytech Drilling, was used to perform live demonstrations. The GEFCO 90K is a heavy-duty, diesel-powered, air/mud hydraulic top drive drill designed for large water well drilling. The students enjoyed witnessing the upgraded GEFCO flagship back in action. With the mast 35 feet in the air, operators successfully demonstrated various drilling techniques, including air and mud drilling. During the final day, instructors focused on air drilling, showing students how deep boreholes can be drilled into rock formations and may be effective where other drilling methods aren’t feasible. Drilling methods are not one size fits all. This was a consistent theme taught to both students and employees throughout training. Many employees joined the course, looking to enhance their understanding so they can better assist customers. The participation of GEFCO staff in Drill School underscores the company’s firm dedication to maintaining the highest level of quality and customer service. Students completed the course confidently knowing the knowledge and skills acquired will not only benefit them, but will also contribute to customer satisfaction and overall success. When speaking with several attendees throughout the course, the common factor between all participants was customer service. “This Drill School is well organized, well thought out, and informative,” said David Helgeson of Drillworx. “As a salesman, I hope to learn information here to better help my customers.” Upon completion of Drill School, students received an industry-recognized certificate along with technical knowledge and a sense of confidence and readiness to take on the diverse challenges of water well drilling. If you missed these opportunities, you can contact the company for upcoming Drill Schools in the works.
