37 MAY 2024 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Constructing the Future - Drilling by Ronald B. Peterson Drilling Products Specialist, Mountainland Supply Company We will get back to our ongoing discussion in another article. “Constructing the Future” is this month’s focus for WWDR. I was going to prattle on about some phase of drilling and realized drilling is involved in every aspect of our lives and specifically “Constructing the Future.” There are so many different drilling disciplines in this industry. Any construction project will involve at least one of them. Basically, any time we intentionally create a bore in the earth it will involve some aspect of drilling. If we are constructing a road, we need to test the proposed route to ensure the stability of the underlying formations and determine what measures we will need to take to be sure it is adequate for a road base. If we are constructing a building, we need to determine the site is adequate to support the desired building. Will there be a portion of it underground and, if so, what are the potential issues we will have, and how can we best deal with them? If we are improving public transportation, there is a possibility it will involve underground portions so we need to determine the best way to ensure stability and public safety. These projects all involve drilling to determine the underlying formations and concerns we will have to deal with to mitigate them. The drilling methods we use may be as simple as a pick and shovel, or in today’s world, an excavator. We may use an auger, or a split spoon sampling method. More detailed information can be obtained with a sonic drill or a continuous wireline core drill. Infrastructure support may be installed using horizontal directional drilling. Foundations are often installed with the support of hydromills, or large auger drills. Last but certainly not least, any facility that will be routinely occupied by people will have to have a dependable water supply likely from a water well - either a municipal well or an individual well. Never underestimate the value and importance of the drilling industry in our lives. You are all a vital and critical part of our existence. Thank you for all you do.
