Rahul Jadhav’s Journey Adapted from Information by the University of Arizona School of Mining & Mineral Resources Computer science major, Rahul Jadhav was one of five hardworking students to receive a $2000 scholarship to pursue a minor in sustainable mineral resources from the University of Arizona School of Mining & Mineral Resources. An international freshman from India, Jadhav is pursuing a bachelor of arts in computer science. With a secondary focus on in sustainable mineral resources, data analytics, and automation he hopes to head toward a career utilizing cutting-edge technology to promote sustainable mining practices. The reason he moved to the U.S was because of the high academic research and high advanced curriculum, which allows him to focus on his prospect and career narrative. He was fascinated by computer science and the idea of working on large language models. When it came to mining, Jadhav met with the campus outreach coordinator Mario Munoz, who told him about the opportunities available in the mining field. They discussed the curriculum and the opportunities available to Jadhav as a computer science student. Jadhav took a particular interest in petroleum engineering because it’s a very broad and diverse field that’s in demand. The reason he shifted to the mining minor is, it’s a different type of job role because you don't have to sit in a nine-to-five office and you have the opportunity to work in natural surroundings. Also, he would have the opportunity to travel around the world and work on top tech machines, with cutting-edge technology. His favorite time has been the undergrad research assistantship at the Technological Center of Excellence. With his computer science background, he’s developing a python script to help with automated rock fall detection, which will detect rock fall from over 45 pounds. They use live thermal imaging videos and integrating scripts to target and analyze how rock falls occur. As a computer science student, and being part of a moon mining mission led by Professor Tenario, his goal is to learn the latest technologies and robotics to be able to integrate those into machine learning. In the future, Jadhav hopes to enhance the sustainability of the industry by reducing the labor workers engage in. MIN
