WorldWide Drilling Resource

25 APRIL 2025 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Producing Lithium with Geothermal Energy Adapted from Information by Vulcan Energy Vulcan Energy has begun construction of its “V20” drill rig at the Schleidberg drilling site near Landau, Germany. This is part of the company’s Lionheart project which will focus on producing lithium while generating geothermal energy. Construction of the drill rig follows the successful completion of central infrastructure work, such as construction of the drilling site, establishing the crew camp, and developing an access road. The electric drill rig has an output of 2500hp and is equipped with a high-pressure pump system with up to 7500 psi. Vulcan established its own in-house drilling company, Vercana, due to the increased demand for geothermal drilling projects. The company has two electric rigs. Once financing of the first phase of the project is complete, Vercana will begin setting up the second rig, "V10" at the planned Trappelberg drilling site. Managing Director and CEO of Vulcan Energy, Cris Moreno said, “The construction of the V20 drill rig is not only an important milestone for our Lionheart project, but also an important step toward building a sustainable and domestic supply chain for lithium. With two fully electric and modern drilling rigs and an experienced team, our in-house drilling company Vercana, is excellently equipped to safely implement the deep geothermal drilling for the production of renewable energy and lithium here in the Upper Rhine Graben in the coming years. This will enable us to make a contribution to the supply of renewable basic heat to the region and to support the changes to electromobility in Germany and Europe. We are now entering a new phase of project development, where the safety and quality of the execution of our project is at the forefront. To meet our high standards, we will work closely with all key partners and stakeholders in the region.” The company uses a two-stage process to convert lithium-rich brine into a battery-quality lithium. The adsorption-style production is powered by geothermal heat, with geothermal energy sent directly to the grid and lithium delivered straight to commercial partners. The Lionheart project plans include one upstream surface facility for geothermal and lithium extraction operations to be fed from multiwell pads. Drilling is expected to begin this year. The Lionheart project has four existing deep geothermal wells which have been in operation for more than ten years.
