Self-Imposed Limitations by Tim Connor It has been said by many experts that the only limitations we encounter in life are those self-limiting ones we place on ourselves. If this is true, why do so few people reach their full potential? Why do so many feel stuck, out of control, and hopeless in their lives? Why do so many give up, quit, settle, resign themselves, or operate from a place of blame, anger, remorse, guilt, regret, resentment, and self-pity when it comes to the quality of their life? Believe me, I have been at the bottom of the barrel a few times in my life. I have also reached the mountaintop on a few occasions, and I have met thousands of people worldwide who believe they do not have any choices. They are stuck - in a job, business, relationship, way of life, a neighborhood, climate, or career - and feel their destiny is not up to them, but someone or something else. You and I are not trees. We can change what we do not like, have, are, are becoming, or heading toward. Why don’t we change these things? Fair question. I also have often waited far too long to change something in my life that wasn’t working or was toxic - and I teach this stuff! Here are a few common reasons: Fear - of the unknown or future, comfortable with where you are. It’s easier to stay in a safe place than stretch your wings. Procrastination - you have the wrong motives, or stay, or fail to change, for the wrong reasons. You are overly concerned with other people’s attitudes about you, feelings toward you, or opinions of you and their indirect or unconscious emotional manipulation. Lack of self-esteem - You don’t really believe you deserve better. The truth is - and I didn’t just invent it or discover it - each of us came into this world headed for greatness in some way. We were engineered for success at birth and conditioned for failure along the way. We have forgotten our heritage. We have the most magnificent organ ever created in our skull - a mind that can create whatever it chooses. There is nothing we cannot do. What inner mental images are you holding in your consciousness that may be holding you back from freeing yourself from the bondage of a previous poor decision? Is it the fear of failure or success? Is it the fear of rejection or public scorn? Is it an inner feeling of unworthiness? Or is it some other emotional issue or scar you have failed to recognize or deal with? Let me close with one of my favorite quotes from one of my mentors, Mark Twain, who said: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor, and catch the trade winds in your sails. Dream, Explore, and Discover.” In His service, Tim Tim Connor may be contacted via e-mail to michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com 35 JANUARY 2025 WorldWide Drilling Resource®
