37 JUNE 2025 WorldWide Drilling Resource® The Importance of Locating Underground Utilities Adapted from Information by Common Ground Alliance (CGA) The Common Ground Alliance, a national organization focused on safeguarding underground utility lines ensuring the safety of those who dig near them, released findings from a recent nationwide survey. The results revealed 27.2 million Americans intending to undertake digging projects in the coming year have not planned to reach out to 811. This oversight places both their safety and that of their communities in jeopardy, increasing the likelihood of utility disruptions, expensive penalties and repairs, and potentially severe injuries or fatalities. Excavating without being aware of the locations of underground utilities poses serious risks, including injuries, service interruptions, and costly repairs. Hitting gas, electric, telecommunications, water, or sewer lines can result in major disruptions for both residences and businesses. To avoid these dangers, individuals can make a free 811 request by calling 811 or submitting a request online. By requesting a dig notice, you ensure underground utility lines are accurately marked before any digging begins, helping to prevent accidents and maintain community safety. Throughout the year, remember to follow these steps when planning your project: j Plan in Advance: This allows sufficient time for the approximate locations of underground lines to be marks. j Verify Markings: Ensure all utility lines have been clearly marked before you begin any work. j Reassess Project Location: If your project is close to where utility lines are marked, consider relocating it to avoid potential hazards. “As we work to unleash American energy, the Department of Transportation will continue to educate the public on free resources they can use to enhance safety,” said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy. “Whether you’re a homeowner planting a garden or a contractor breaking ground on a major project, we encourage you to contact 811 prior to any excavation activity to ensure a safe dig every time.” HDD
