38 MARCH 2025 WorldWide Drilling Resource® the cove and entered the deep middle area, the water was so choppy it was difficult to see her head. I was afraid one of the speeding motorboats would not see her and run over her. I was starting to panic because it was clear she was not going to turn around, so I grabbed my canoe, jumped into the middle of it, sat on my knees, and paddled furiously kayak style. I made good time until I left the cove, then a brisk wind blowing across the wide part of the lake kept pushing me away from my dog. Eventually, I realized I needed to stop paddling into the wind, so I turned the boat 60 degrees to the left of Trixie’s position. I was still fighting the wind, but only half as much. I paddled in that direction until I was parallel to her. Next, I turned the boat again; this time 60 degrees to the right so I would meet Trixie’s trajectory. My maneuvers were roughly creating an equilateral triangle to my pup’s hypotenuse. My strategy still required me to travel a couple of hundred feet, which was a long way to go with so many motorboats speeding around us, so I kept paddling as fast as I could. Meanwhile, the ducks continued swimming at a pace that was just fast enough to keep out of Trixie’s reach, but not far enough away for her to lose interest. I was convinced these ducks knew just what they were doing. My dumb dog would follow them until she ran out of energy and drowned. Finally, my path put my canoe between the ducks and Trixie. She looked happy and relieved to see me as I pulled her into the boat. As soon as she was onboard, I heard a booming cheer and loud clapping behind me. I whipped my head around to see nearly three dozen people on the point giving me another standing ovation. I waved thank-you to the assemblage while Trixie lay at my feet puffing and panting heavily. As I paddled back to the campsite, I chuckled aloud, “I’m gonna name this Ovation Cove.” Today, someone would’ve whipped out their mobile phone video camera and I might’ve enjoyed my Andy Warhol 15 minutes of fame as a YouTube sensation. It’s funny how you never really know who might be observing you - which is more true than ever with the increasing number of surveillance cameras popping up all over the place. It reminds me of the adage: “Character is how you behave when no one is watching.” I will revisit - in depth - the topic of Character in a future issue. In the meantime, just remember: you never know who’s watching! Robert Robert is an innovation/change speaker, author, and consultant.
