35 OCTOBER 2025 WorldWide Drilling Resource® First Geothermal Drilling in Tenerife Adapted from Information by ThinkGeoEnergy Geothermal drilling is set to commence on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands of Spain, marking a significant milestone for the region. The initiative will be led by Energía Geotérmica de Canarias, a collaborative effort involving Iceland’s Reykjavík Geothermal, DISA (the largest energy firm in the Canary Islands), and the Tenerife government, alongside public entities such as the Technological Institute and Renewable Energies and the Canary Islands Volcanological Institute. Drilling will reach depths of approximately 8000 to 10,000 feet, to assess the potential for geothermal energy as a sustainable, reliable, and local energy source for the island. This geothermal exploration project comes at a crucial time, as Tenerife faces an urgent need for sustainable and costeffective energy solutions. Currently, over 80% of the island’s electricity is generated from imported oil, a practice that poses environmental threats and financial burdens, necessitating state subsidies to help residents manage their energy expenses across the island. Given the limitations for hydroelectric power generation and the lack of space for new large-scale wind and solar installations - which require significantly more land than geothermal plants - the importance of geothermal energy is becoming increasingly prominent in the strategic energy plans of local authorities. Preliminary surface surveys conducted last year indicated promising geothermal activity in the island’s southern and western regions. If successful, drilling could pave the way for the establishment of geothermal power plants on Tenerife, potentially transforming the island’s energy landscape and decreasing its reliance on imported oil. Reykjavík Geothermal is participating as both an owner and technical leader of the project, leveraging its vast experience in global geothermal development to facilitate this groundbreaking initiative in Tenerife. “This project is based on the experience, knowledge and belief of us Icelanders in geothermal energy as a sustainable energy source, and could completely change the situation for energy production in Tenerife. The trust that our partners in the project place in us is a great recognition of Icelandic ingenuity and expertise in the field of geothermal energy and an honor for us,” said Magnús Ásbjörnsson, CEO of Reykjavík Geothermal.
