HDD In Memoriam Maynard Carl Akkerman (1955~2025) Maynard Carl Akkerman, age 69, of Brownsdale, Minnesota, passed away July 19, 2025 surrounded by the love of his family. Growing up in rural Brownsdale with two sisters and two brothers, he was active in 4-H and developed a lifelong love for the outdoors and hands-on learning. He attended Trinity Lutheran School and Holy Cross, graduated from Hayfield High School in 1973, and proudly earned his education from the “School of Hard Knocks.” Maynard dedicated his life to Akkerman Inc., where he was involved from birth, and his passion for the company was evident to all who knew him. He was a globally recognized leader in the trenchless industry whose innovations and dedication left a lasting mark on the infrastructure community. His career was distinguished by numerous honors, including induction into the North American Society for Trenchless Technology Hall of Fame in 2019, The Moles in 2009, and being named Trenchless Technology Person of the Year for 2008. He also received the Microtunneling Achievement Award in 2016 and was proud to have Akkerman equipment featured in the 2007 New Installation Project of the Year. These accolades reflected his technical excellence and his personal integrity and leadership. Maynard’s contributions helped shape the future of the trenchless industry and inspired countless professionals in the field. A man of many talents and interests, Maynard was an avid hunter and fisherman, stock car and drag racer, and the proud 2019 Strip Eliminator 1 Champion at Brainerd International Speedway with his beloved 1965 Belvedere “KONG.” He loved motorcycle trips out West, fishing adventures in Canada, and deer hunting at the family hunting lodge with his sons, family, and friends. He cherished ranger rides and boating with his grandchildren, time at the cabin, and traveling with his wife Robin. Above all, Maynard loved his family, his friends, and his faith. Maynard is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Robin; children Derek (Dawn), Justin (Heidi), and Andrew (Abby); treasured grandchildren Ollie, Owen, Aubrey, Grant, Stella, Evalyn, Flynn, and Easton; as well as his sisters Ruth (James) and Barb (Wade), and many other cherished family members and close friends.
