32 SEPTEMBER 2025 WorldWide Drilling Resource® The History of Gus Pech Manufacturing Adapted from Information by Gus Pech Manufacturing Company, Inc. Gus Pech Mfg. Co., Inc. has been a leader in the production of earth drilling equipment for more than 130 years. Founded in 1879 by Gus Pech in Storm Lake, Iowa, the company later relocated to Le Mars, Iowa - to enhance accessibility to the railway system. Gus Pech’s vision was to deliver durable and cost-effective earth drilling equipment to his customers, a commitment that still resonates within the company today. Renowned in the drilling industry, the company is dedicated to the principle of building a rig to fit the drill operator, not the drill operator to fit the rig. This philosophy is achieved by fostering strong relationships with customers and understanding their specific drilling requirements, whether they involve water wells, dewatering, elevator jack holes, oilfield conductor holes, hazardous waste recovery, exploration, soil testing, coring, sampling, monitoring, cathodic protection, geothermal energy, or roto-sonic drilling. In addition to drilling rigs, the company manufactures its own buckets for the Super George bucket drill machines - including drop bottom, coring, clam/core, plunger, belling buckets, and augers, along with the kelly system and numerous accessories. As a fabrication shop, they also offer machining and fabrication services for construction, agriculture, and personal projects. Their equipment is distributed across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and worldwide. W.O. Collins was a salesman for the company, overseeing a territory that included Iowa, Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Montana, and the Canadian Provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Eventually, W.O. acquired half of the company from Mary Pech, Gus Pech’s widow, and later purchased her remaining shares. In 1955, he passed the business on to his sons Wayne and Robert. Robert later acquired Wayne’s stake, and the business was incorporated in 1965, with Robert Collins assuming the role of President. The company moved to a new facility in the Le Mars Industrial Area in 1977. In 1986, Robert’s sons Cris and Gregg took over ownership, with Cris serving as President and Gregg as Vice President. Since its inception in 1879, Gus Pech has produced a diverse range of machines capable of drilling holes from two inches to ten feet in diameter and reaching depths of up to 1500 feet, originally using cast gears, sprockets, chains, and clutches powered by horses, steam, and gasoline. In 1972, these components were upgraded to steel gears, along with open hydraulic and closed-loop hydrostatic systems, with most equipment now operated by diesel power. Throughout the years, Gus Pech Mfg. Co., Inc. has continually adapted its rig designs to accommodate emerging technologies and evolving drilling methods. Their extensive selection of equipment encompasses auger/rotary, sonic, geothermal, and dewatering rigs suitable for both large-scale industrial projects and smaller residential applications. As the earth drilling landscape evolves, so too does Gus Pech. GEO For more information call: (270) 786-3010 or visit us online: www.geothermalsupply.com All New!
