Without a high-quality, locking cap, the well and entire dataset can be vulnerable to three major and very expensive risks. Data Contamination and False Positives: Surface influence is what hydrogeologists call the unwanted introduction of outside materials going into the well casing. This is caused by an unsealed or poorly fitted cap. Water quality results can be altered by rainwater containing road salt, runoff from nearby industrial activity, dust, and even insects can trickle down an unprotected casing. After a heavy rainfall, environmental professionals often jump to conclusions when they see a sudden spike in VOC (volatile organic compounds) or metals concentrations and assume plume migration or a new release. However, the cause is often far simpler: a faulty cap. Due to a compromised cap, teams can spend days running additional sampling, calling in specialists, and fielding difficult questions from regulators, which can cause additional fees. Vandalism, Tampering, and Physical Damage: Typically, monitoring wells are located in hard-to-reach areas, highway rights-of-way, or publicly accessible industrial sites. Without a secure, lockable system, these wells become surprisingly easy targets. Whether it’s someone dropping debris into the borehole, or intentional tampering intended to obscure a legitimate contamination signal, the consequences can be devastating. In addition, a well-designed cap not only protect against accidental damage caused by on-site machinery - a scenario far more common than most project managers care to admit. The expenses of rehabilitating or completely redrilling a compromised well can run into tens of thousands of dollars. Regulatory Compliance and Legal Liability: The most immediate risk is in nature. Many state environmental agencies have certain Well Construction Standards requiring a lockable, watertight cap on all monitoring wells. An inspection that uncovers a missing, broken, or nonlocking cap can simply generate a polite recommendation. It can result in formal notices of violation, stop-work orders, and fines which accumulate daily until the problem is resolved. Even more critically, it can cast doubt on the validity of all historical data collected from the well - potentially unraveling years of carefully documented site characterization work. Your monitoring well is a significant investment - covering drilling costs, laboratory fees, staff time, and years of site characterization work it supports. Protecting this investment does not require advanced technology or expensive interventions. It begins at the surface, with the right cap. Grip-N-Lock well cap WTR In Memoriam Richard Eugene “Dick” Downey (1939~2026) Richard Eugene “Dick” Downey passed away on June 28, 2026, at the age of 86. Born in Anselmo, Nebraska, he graduated from Merna High School in 1957. In 1959, he married Patsy. Though eventually parting ways, they shared many meaningful years building a family of eight sons. Dick was a farmer, truck driver, and heavy equipment operator before going to Sargent Irrigation in 1966. After a decade of drilling and repairing water wells, Dick founded Downey Well Service in 1976. In 1989, Dick returned to Sargent Irrigation and moved to Elko, Nevada. In 1994, he moved back to Nebraska and worked for Sargent Pipe in Broken Bow. Dick joined his son Tom’s Downey Drilling Inc. as their Chief Transportation Officer in 2009. Eventually retiring in 2023, Dick continued to support Downey Drilling as Executive Advisor. Then when facing health challenges in late 2025, he decided to move into a long-term care facility. A lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus of Broken Bow, Dick also enjoyed stock car racing, riding motorcycles, and caring for the large lawn at his Merna farm home. Dick is survived by his sons Tom (Audrey), Mark, Steve (Lynnette), Dave (Annette), Greg, Matthew (Karen), and Dr. Tim (Dr. Michelle); 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; as well as his siblings Jim, Ella Mae (Gene), and Mike (Sheila).
