WorldWide Drilling Resource®

30 SEPTEMBER 2026 WorldWide Drilling Resource® Each level up to pride are negative states of consciousness. The first positive level state of consciousness is courage. Reflecting on when I was a child, I went through several levels in one year. I was severely bullied as a kid in elementary school in first through third grades. I was bullied by older boys at school because I was bullied - abused if you will - by my parents. My mother was a narcissistic perfectionist who was obsessed with appearances; my father was her enforcer. I was beaten, shamed, and criticized frequently. My sense of self-esteem and state of consciousness were so low I walked around with my head down and my shoulders hunched over - a survival posture people use to be invisible and symbolically protect their heart. Instead of seeing this as a sign of distress, my parents constantly yelled at me to hold my shoulders back. To appease them, I thrust my shoulders back so dramatically it actually affected the way I walked. I was terrified of school before I even started. The older kids in my neighborhood told me tall tales about spanking machines, knuckle crushers, and other tortures randomly inflicted on kids for no reason. As I walked to school each day, my protective “don’t notice me” posture had the opposite effect. It attracted bullies to me like hyenas to a wounded gazelle on the Serengeti. Bullies prey on the weak because they too lack self-esteem. The bullying continued for three years. By fourth grade, however, the bullying subsided. I can’t say why, perhaps because I’d learned how to avoid the upper class students, or I was bigger and no longer looked like an easy mark. The bullying picked up again in fifth grade. This time, it was my own classmates who bullied me. It started when two boys attacked me on the playground. One jumped onto my back and pinned my arms down with his knees while the other socked me in the stomach, knocking my breath out. I fell to the ground and couldn’t move for several minutes until I was able to breathe again. This got the attention of the whole class. The boy who hit me bragged he took me out with one punch - and didn’t share he had an accomplice. In the following weeks and months, several boys challenged me to fights thinking they too could beat me and earn some bragging rights. This time I wasn’t afraid, I was angry and my pride made me determined to not allow my peers - my equals - to get away with it. My anger grew into the courage to stand up to the bullies and fight back. I asked my dad, who was a boxing champ in high school, for some fighting lessons, which he gladly provided. He advised me to not hit the bullies in the nose because it would bleed or to hit them under the chin, which could knock them out - both of which he said would get me in trouble. Instead, he suggested I hit them as hard as I could on the cheek. “Try to do this on your first punch; it will hurt so much, it will likely end the fight right away.” His advice worked. Most fights ended after my first punch. Before the school year was over, word got around that I couldn’t be beat, and the bullying ended. Sixth grade was peaceful; my state of consciousness had improved. I even made a new best friend with one of the boys who bullied me the year before. In my experience, achieving courage doesn’t transfer automatically to all areas of our lives. We have to achieve it in each area separately (school, work, hobbies, relationships, etc.), but once we’ve achieved it in one area, it does become easier in the others. When I look back to fifth grade, I see I advanced up the scale of states of consciousness from fear, to anger and pride, to courage, and finally peace. Finding the courage to stand up for myself was liberating; I stopped fearing school for the first time and came to enjoy it. Today, whenever I sense some hesitation as I move forward in some area of my life, I remind myself to be courageous. In the meantime, I will continue to study the concept of states of consciousness. I would like to find more peace, and maybe even joy and enlightenment. So instead of encouraging you to “be bold,” “take risks,” or “stand up for yourself,” I encourage you to develop courage in every area of your life. Then watch how new opportunities begin to open up for you. Robert Robert is an innovation/change speaker, author, and consultant.
