The revolutionary CT drilling platform enables mineral exploration companies to significantly improve their environmental footprint and productivity by meeting the challenges of exploring in the region’s deep frontier areas, barely touched in decades of previous exploration. Developed in collaboration with industry partners Anglo American, BHP, Epiroc, LKAB Wassara, South 32, and the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia, the CT platform can drill through unconsolidated cover and hard rock formations to depths of over 1600 feet, delivering safety, efficiency, productivity, and high-quality sampling with minimal infrastructure and streamlined operating processes. “The key feature of RoXplorer® CT drill rig is the patented mast design and over-the-hole positioning of the coil reel,” MinEx CRC CEO Andrew Bailey said. This enables increased coil life, seamless transition between CT and conventional topdrive drilling, as well as rapid loading and unloading of tooling and drill string which is incorporated on the rig for ease of set up, breakdown, and transport. The CT drilling platform occupies a drill site which is significantly smaller than most conventional drill rigs, and average water consumption was less than one-eighth when tested in a comparable drilling scenario. All fluids are passed through the MinEx CRC-designed Hydraulic Processing System (HPS), where they are cleaned of cuttings, recycled, and returned to the drill hole. The drilling platform relies almost entirely on the exclusive drilling additive CTrol, which was developed by Curtin University researchers at MinEx CRC. Fluid management operates in a semiautonomous mode, using the MinEx CRC iFluid system, which was supervised remotely by the research team located in Perth. The combination of CTrol and iFluid ensures a stable borehole, typically with less than 150 feet of casing required at the top-of-hole, with efficient cuttings return and minimal fluid loss to the formation. Schramm (as a subsidiary of Epiroc) will build the CT rig and associated HPS, while DIG CT will offer the RoXplorer® CT drilling platform as a drilling service for hire, with one initial drill rig in operation, with the intent to grow the fleet as mineral explorers recognize the value and utility of the novel CT technology.
