WorldWide Drilling Resource

33 MARCH 2025 WorldWide Drilling Resource® The Alberta Drilling Accelerator Adapted from Information by the Government of Alberta With its highly advanced drilling expertise, Alberta, Canada, is well-positioned to drive innovations, but the lack of an open-access test site limits the development of leading edge drilling technologies required to tap into geothermal, lithium, natural gas, and oil. To address the technology gap, Alberta’s government will provide up to $50 million in funding from the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction Program to support the Alberta Drilling Accelerator, a novel public-private partnership model that will foster the development of emissionreducing technologies and create jobs. The Alberta government invested $750,000 in a project supporting a feasibility study, conducted by Calgary-based Eavor Technologies, the Canadian Association of Energy Contractors, and the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association. Preliminary findings indicate that establishing an industry-led Alberta Drilling Accelerator is economically and environmentally viable. The accelerator’s primary function would allow companies to test and refine drilling techniques and technologies, which would in turn accelerate the development of industries that rely on drilling, including those involved in geothermal, helium, critical minerals, carbon capture, and other drilling sectors. Industry leaders, including Eavor Technologies, Tourmaline Oil Corp, and Halliburton, have shown significant interest in becoming anchor tenants, but no formal agreements have been finalized. Once operational, the Alberta Drilling Accelerator may begin drilling as soon as 2026, accelerating the development of various technologies, all of which leverage Alberta’s world-class drilling capabilities. “What we’re doing here today is setting the stage for innovation and prosperity far into the future. The Alberta Drilling Accelerator means big things for oil and gas exploration in our province, but also for industries that will be vital for achieving our goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. We are setting the stage for innovation and prosperity, pushing Alberta’s drilling expertise to places it’s never been before,” said Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta. GEO
